Diversity in the Teachers’ Room
Integrating Outstanding Arab Teachers into Jewish Schools
For the last eight years The Merchavim Institute has worked collaboratively with the Ministry of Education – Central District, to integrate Arab teachers of math, science and English into Jewish schools.
The integration of excellent Arab teachers into Jewish schools, that are experiencing challenges finding and placing teachers of specific subjects, is logical both in terms of the quality of the teaching and makes sense economically.
The Advantages:
- The integration of talented teachers according to the system’s needs.
- Promotion of "coexistence" between Jewish and Arab citizens and building respect for each other.
- Integrating Israeli Arab citizens into the public sector.
- Large saving on training or retraining of new teachers by the State by using existing human resources – an estimated saving of 300 million NIS by the integration of 500 unemployed teachers in within 5 years.
In the 2014 school year the Ministry of Education began to implement a five year plan for the integrating of 500 outstanding 500 Arab teachers in English, science and math in all Jewish schools in the districts. Implementation of the plan is carried out in cooperation with the Office of the Prime Minister and Merchavim.
To date there are 91 teachers integrated into various teaching professions and Merchavim has now started the process for the coming year.
Arab Teachers of mathematics, the sciences (biology, chemistry, physics and science), and English who are interested in teaching in Jewish schools in the center of the country as well as in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and the South, are invited to contact Merchavim via this email – lina@merchavim.net.
